The Ondo Town Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists against violation of traffic rules and regulation as well as indulging in alcohol consumption during the Yuletide season.

This warning was given at the weekend in Ondo city, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government area of the state, by the Unit Commander in charge of the Ondo town unit R S 11:24 of the FRSC, Mr. Olarewaju Adewumi, during the flagging off of the Yuletide campaign in the area.

The programme tagged: “Right to life on the highway: not negotiable” which the commission said was geared towards ensuring an accident free period,  during the Christmas  and New Year celebrations in areas under the jurisdiction of Ondo town unit command of the organization.

Adewumi, an Assistant Corps Commandant (ACC) noted  that  the sensitization and awareness exercise was necessary,  considering the fact that the last month of the year (December) when the exercise  is taken place,  is usually associated with  lots  of activities  which involve large movement of human and vehicular traffic.

He further stated  that as a result of the peculiar situation   during  the period, there  is need for  drivers  and  other  road users to exercise extra care and  vigilance as  well as patience whenever they ply   the road,  in order  to avert  what he described as avoidable crashes.

While stressing the  need for  vehicle  owners, especially commercial drivers to ensure  that  their vehicles  are properly serviced   in addition to providing all the necessary accessories such as good tyres, headlamp, wipers and other necessities before embarking on a trip, the  Ondo town unit commander said this was necessary and will enhance  safety on the road during  the period.

He explained that the theme of this year’s sensitization was chosen to remind motorists of the need to place more emphasis on the sanctity of their lives and obey all traffic rules and regulations which he said is geared towards safeguarding their lives.

While emphasizing the need for cooperation and support from all stakeholders, for the exercise to achieve the desired result, Adewumi  said this was important as the FRSC should not be left alone in the crusade of ensuring safety of lives and property on the road.

Also speaking at the occasion, the unit head of operations of the Ondo town unit command  of the FRSC, Mrs. Mary Oladele, described human error and negligence as the major cause of increase in the rate of road crashes according to a research carried out by the organisation.

She explained that the trend could be addressed  through attitudinal change which could be demonstrated   by motorists through  obedience  of traffic rules  and regulations.

While reiterating the determination of officials of the FRSC in Ondo town Unit Command towards the safety of the people, she advised them to shun acts such as overloading, night travels, driving of rickety vehicles, over speeding, consumption of alcohol or any other intoxicants as well as the use of expired tyres which could put their lives at risk while driving on the road.

In a remark at the occasion, the Zonal Chairman of the Ekimogun branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mr. Ojo Akinmade, commended the officials of the FRSC for several safety measures and enlightenment campaigns put in place in the area  which he said has reduced road crashes to minimum level.

The NURTW boss called on the officials of the FRSC to expedite action that will checkmate the activities of the commercial tricycle operators operating in the area which he said were normally found along the major highways in the area.
