The Ondo State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has commended the leadership of Akoko North West and Akoko South West Local Government Areas of the state for executing functional projects that have direct impacts on the lives of the people at the grassroots.
The committee under the chairmanship of Hon. Jamiu Maito gave the commendation after separate inspection of projects executed by the two councils in their various localities in the last one year.
The projects inspection is one of the major aspects of the ongoing oversight function by the lawmakers across the 18 council areas of the state.
At Oke-Agbe Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko North West Local Government Area, Hon. Maito gave kudos to the leadership of the council for meeting the needs of the people in the rural areas.
He explained that the oversight function is one of the constitutional duties of the legislators to ensure that public funds are judiciously utilised for the benefit of the people.
Maito specially lauded the principal officers of the council for effective utilisation of the funds released by the state government for capital projects, noting that the committee was impressed by the excellent performance by the council.
Some of the projects inspected are boreholes, line drainages, culverts, Legislative Chambers among others.
He emphasised that the committee was not out to witch-hunt or victimise anybody but to ensure that people at the grass-roots get real dividends of democracy and have sense of belonging.
The committee Chairman added that as the closest government to the people at the grass root, the third tier of government is expected to execute functional and people-centred projects in their localities.
He advised all the local government areas to think outside the box to improve on their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to further move their councils forward.
Maito also charged all the Supervisors in their respective council areas to be up and doing and work to develop their councils.
Other members of the committee on the oversight visit are, Hon. Kaseem Suleiman, the Vice Chairman; Hon. (Barr). Olusegun Ajimotokin, Deputy Majority Leader; Hon. Sunday Olajide; Hon. Felemu Bankole; Hon. (Engr) Mukaila Musa , and Mr. Bola Ibuola, the Committee Secretary.
In separate remarks, other members of the committee also commended the leadership of the council for executing projects that have direct positive impacts on the lives of rural dwellers.
They equally charged all local government officials to always work hands in hands and make transparency, accountability, probity and openness their watchwords for the development of their respective councils.
In his reactions, the Caretaker Chairman of Akoko North West Local Government Area, Architect Ajayi Morakinyo appreciated the committee for their visit and promised to always execute projects based on the needs of the people at the grass roots.
Also at Oka-Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko South West Local Government Area, the committee lauded the leadership of the council for using the limited resources at its disposal to execute projects that have direct bearings on the lives of the people.
The Caretaker Chairman of the council, Mr. Augustine Oloruntogbe, thanked the committee for their interest and passion for grass roots development, just as he solicited their support to further develop the local government.
