National leader of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has assured that the party would be constitutional in the selection of its Presidential candidate for the 2019 elections.
Tinubu made this known while fielding questions from Journalists, during his visit to leader of the Pan Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, where he described APC as a true democratic party alongside.
The Senator, who denied the endorsement of Buhari as the sole candidate for the party by APC Governor’s, said no governor could appropriate the power of endorsement to himself.
“Buhari is a believer in the rule of law. If you follow the constitutional procedures of APC, an individual or group opinion doesn’t really matter at this stage.
Describing such moves as preemptive, when the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has yet to fix guidelines for the polls, Tinubu said anybody that would fly the party’s ticket for the 2019 polls, would emerge through credible primaries.
Tinubu who was accompanied on the visit by former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, added that no governors can appropriate the power of endorsement to themselves, saying Buhari is a believer in the process.
“The Buhari I know, believes in the rule of law. We wanted him even before the last convention and primary of the party and Akeredolu is here standing with me, he was not the governor then, he was one of the leading delegates that voted properly and Buhari was a clear winner.
“But if the national body of APC, National Executive Council (NEC) and all of us as members now gather together and endorse Buhari as our single candidate, we will not be violating INEC regulations or our own constitution.
“What you are hearing from anybody is a campaign to be chorused by other people who want to do so.
“Buhari has not excluded anybody and does not infringe on anybody’s ambition, if they have,” he said.
He further said there was still hard work ahead to win the votes, and as a democrat, he believe in constitutional democracy.
Speaking to journalists after a closed door meeting with Fasoranti, Tinubu, flanked by the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), said he came to visit Fasonranti as a foremost leader in the south west region.
The Senator who acknowledged the leadership qualities of Chief Reuben Fasoranti, described him as a great leader of the Yoruba race.
“He has been a great leader in his youth and time. He is aging gracefully and his intellect is still very intact. I have come to seek his advice on a number of issues, understanding and prayers,” he said.
