Ondo State Government is set to demolish illegal structures at the Igbokoda International Market in order to put an end to impediment of smooth trading activities.
The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Otunba Timehin Adelegbe disclosed this while speaking with journalists during a visit to the market.
Adelegbe added that the shops that are not legally built by the government hinder people to occupy the shops and cause traffic gridlock on the roads.
The commissioner further added that they concluded at the end of the meeting among the ministry, Oba, Local Government and the stakeholders in the market that all the illegal shops be demolished after getting approval from the governor.
He said that collection of rent on shops will only be done by the officers of the ministry.
According to him, the marketers should be encouraged to move to the market so that the roads can be free of traffic.
“The agreement will yield results, the kabiyesi and the local government are in charge of the market, immediately we start demolition, they will know that government wants to maintain sanity in the market and this I believe will increase the revenue in the market and the market will be run properly, ” he noted.
He therefore urged the market men and women to act in line with the agreement the stakeholders have reached, saying that it is in their interest and the interest of the community.
Speaking earlier, the Caretaker Chairman, Ilaje Local Government, Hon. Fayowole Aworetan described the meeting as a way forward to clear issues about Igbokoda.
The Caretaker Chairman said the market will be a patronage to all the market men and women across Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.
Aworetan promised to partner with the people of Igbokoda to move it forward.
Also speaking, the Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Oladimeji expressed joy and described the government led by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN as one which provides the best for the people of the state.
The kabiyesi commended the commissioner for coming to see things for himself ,saying this has given him first hand information and the ideas he has gathered will help him in his policy making.
