Young Lawyers Forum Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association in Ondo State has bestowed awards of honour on the former Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly and now the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Taofik Abdulsalam, High Court Justices Bode Adegbehingbe and Omolara Adejumo.
Other awardees are one time commissioner of Justice and attorney-general, Remi Olatubora, NBA chairman, Mr. Adetunji Oso, Barr. Olusola Oke, Prof. Ernest Ojukwu among others.
The presentation of awards took place during the Ondo State chapters Young Lawyers Forum’s arm of the Nigeria Bar Association dinner held in Akure, the State capital recently .
Hon. Justice O. Akintan-Osadebey while presenting a paper at the event urged senior members of the Nigerian Bar to create more opportunities and avenue to strengthen Young lawyers and to mold them into leaders that would be able to take over the mantle of leadership when the time comes for a better justice delivery system.
”The role of Young Lawyers in the administration of justice cannot be over-emphasized, because they are seen as the future of our legal profession, the young lawyer is a major stakeholder in the Justice section and they play an important role in the effective and efficient administration of justice,” he said.
He however lamented the issue of under-employment of the young lawyers, which leads according to him crisis of confidence, financial challenges and possibly a total lack of passion for the profession which will eventually snowball into an epileptic justice delivery system.
He observed that most lawyers are not paid salaries that are commensurate with the services rendered as Legal practitioners. He said that for the aforesaid reason, they are not loyal or dedicated to the system as they are forced to exploit other ways to make ends meet.
Osadebey urged the young lawyers not to restrict themselves to the old school practice saying that they must embrace the technology that can enable institutions like banks to successfully rise up to the challenges of rendering the fast and accurate service that the electronic age disposition offers.
He urged lawyers to maintain a high level of discipline, impeccable standard of ethics, integrity and honesty in order to enhance their performance.
He further encouraged the lawyers that they must be very patient, determined, and tactful and must persevere in their quest for success, saying that they must not shy from taking pro-bono cases and offer free legal advices in the first few years of private practice.
According to him, the Young lawyers must not lose their passion by getting disappointed and discouraged. “Do not hop from one job to another; you might lose your focus.
“As young lawyers, you have to unlock your potentials”.
Osadebey charged them to break the barriers that hinder the effective administration of justice delivery in whichever.
