It was an exciting day here in Akure township stadium where we saw grassroot football developed in Ondo state whereby the tournament was organised by the National Youth Service Corps Akure south local government, sponsored by Nestle Milo and supported by Ondo state government.
The competition started on the 3rd of October,2017 where twenty secondary schools were invited and fourteen secondary school participated, four teams qualifying for the semi final. Akure Commercial Secondary School, Command Secondary School formally known as Army Secondary School, St Michael Secondary School and St Peter Unity School.
Akure Commercial Secondary School were eventual winner of the competition defeating Command Secondary School 2 goals to nil. The goals were scored by Chinedu Nwosu who actually got the award for the highest goal scorer and also Falana Victor Kunle of Akure Commercial Secondary School who won the Most Valuable Player (MVP)award and again Afoloyan Gbenga who won the best goal keeper award also from Akure Commercial Secondary school.
Speaking with one of the organisers of the competition, who said that “we have been planning this type of competition since February when we were in camp, this is the first of its kind hosted in Akure South local government by the NYSC corp, encouraging other NYSC corp member in other local govt of the state, to organize this type of competition that would nurture young footballers and grassroot football”.
He also thanked the schools principal, Ondo State government, Nestle milo and also the players for showing good characters and commitment.
The occasion was graced with important dignitaries, Commissioner for youth and sports Hon. Saka Ogunleye and Nestle Milo food sales manager Mr Tunde Awonusi.
