A toothbrush is an oral hygiene instrument used to clean the teeth, gum and tongue. It consists of a head of lightly clustered bristles mounted on a handle which facilitates the cleaning of hard to reach areas of the mouth. It replaces the traditional chewing stick. It is an indispensable instrument in the daily lives of both old and young.
Toothbrushes are available with different bristle textures, sizes and form. Some are of nylon textures while some are made with animal hair bristles. Some are hard while some one soft. Most dentists recommend using a soft toothbrush since hard bristled toothbrushes can damage tooth enamel and irritate the gum.
The form of a toothbrush will determine its efficiency. There are some hard to reach places in our mouths and it is not all toothbrushes that can reach them. So the form of a toothbrush will go a long way in determining its efficiency.
Because of the important of this instrument, producers of toothbrushes have gone further to produce electric toothbrushes. Though costlier, it performs rotation of its bristles, cleans hard to reach places and does a better job than manual toothbrush according to studies. Another thing about electric toothbrush is comfortability.
To maximise the efficiency of our toothbrushes, experts have advised that we manage our toothbrushes very well. One of the ways to do that is to rinse it with water after use, shake it off and let it dry. We are also advised to replace it when it is bent or when its bristles are worn out.
According to these experts, it is not recommended to share toothbrushes with others. Besides general hygiene concerns there is a risk of transmitting diseases that are typically transmittable by blood.
A toothbrush is worthless when the right one is not bought. These are some characteristics that you look out for in choosing the best toothbrush.
Soft bristled:- Experts suggest that the best toothbrush for removing plaque and debris from our teeth is the soft bristled one.
Small headed:- Another thing to look for is the size of the head. Small headed toothbrush can better reach all areas including hard to reach tooth.
Handle shape: The shape of the handle of a toothbrush will determine its comfortability and effectiveness. One that is non slip grip and flexible is best according to study. The best toothbrush is the one that fits your mouth and allows you to reach all teeth easily.
For children, pick a child sized toothbrush with soft bristles.
