Wife of Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, at the weekend inaugurated a Management Committee for the Ondo State Summer Tennis Clinic, billed to commence very soon in the state.
Inaugurating the eight–man Committee at the Government House, Akure, Mrs Akeredolu said the programme is to encourage sports development among youths in the state, particularly at the grassroots.
She described tennis as a type of sports that is participant friendly, safe and conducive for indoor activities.
Members of the Committee are Engineer Olumuyiwa Sonuga – Chairman, Mr. Tony Omonori – Vice Chairman, Mr. Henry Babatunde – Secretary and Prince Wale Olateru Olagbegi, Mrs. Idowu Joyce Akinbulumo, Mr. Martins Adeojo, Mr. Adewumi Olabanji, Comrade Blessing Adebowale Akinlosotu, Mr. Sheun Gabriel Akinleye Betiku as members.
She tasked the Committee to come up with good action plans for the development of the Summer Tennis Clinic in state, noting that she is ready at all times to support sports development in the State.
It could be recalled that the First Lady had earlier parleyed with accomplished sports men and women – Nduka Odizor (Nigeria tennis expert), Mary Onyali (national athlete) and sports administrator, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye on how to encourage sports development among youths and make the state hub of tennis sporting activities.
She said the programme would begin during the summer vacation and would aggressively develop tennis at the grassroots in order to discover and develop potentials, skills of the young ones, who are capable of becoming champions in the nearest future.
At that time, Nigeria’s Tennis Champion, Nduka Odizor, assured of his commitment to make the project a reality, as part of his desire to give back to the country, while the former Director General, National Sports Commission, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, said with the commitment of the accomplished sports professionals in the project, he is certain that Ondo State will soon be a cynosure of all eyes in the area of tennis.
