Farmers in the state have been enjoined to start the preparation of their land in readiness for the year’s planting season.
Giving the advice on Monday, the Project Manager, Ondo State Agro climatological Project, Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Sunday Akintomide advised farmers to start clearing their land saying, we are gradually entering into rainy season.
His words: “The pattern is that rainy season starts from end of March to early April. March is the heart of dry season when dry season is in the peak. But anything from March ending to early April, rain begins to fall. So our farmers should start clearing their land in preparation for planting”
While advising them not to start heaping now as a result of lack of enough moisture in the soil, Akintomide said the soil is still dry adding that except the farm is in the river area where soil moisture is high.
According to him, farming activity that is ongoing now is harvesting of crops like yam, cocoyam, cassava among others.
While saying farming activities are always on going for dryseason farmers because the moisture is high in their farms, he advised them to weed their farms regularly adding that their farm will constantly grow weed as a result of high soil moisture.
He also said they can start to harvest mature maize which they planted during dry season.
