City Watch: After the festivities: of resolutions and responsibilities

In the last few days there has been some holidays having to do with Christmas, Ed El Malud and New Year. During this period many things happened that can serve as distraction, many events to attend to, idle hours to waste. But it is now time for the serious business of living. There are mounting bills to attend to, work to get back to, business strategy to focus on, it goes on and on, added to the fact that one needs to set goals, make resolutions and gear up for a better life.

But in the hustle and bustle of life, in the process of changing times and seasons, the demands of time, family and friends, do not forget to commit to a better you. A better you is not just about wishful thinking. It is what you do daily that amounts to drops and drops of water that eventually fills you up with the proverbial change.

You need to reevaluate your commitment. See what adds to you and what does not. Reevaluate the way you spend our time, the company you keep, what you have poured your energy into that yielded fruit in the past and what did not. You cannot afford to, this year, move through the motion of living, you have to make a meaning of it.

It is not about making new year resolutions, it is about the resolve with which you make them. You need to reevaluate what works and what does not. All these will be futile without a deeper understanding of who you are and your place, your opportunities, where you want to be, what is under your control and what is not.

As a politician, there are things within your control, focus on those things and do not try to unjustly manipulate the outcome of elections. As a student, at whatever level, studying as at when due, covering the syllabus, not wasting your time with frivolity are all under your control. Do not try to cheat your way to the top of the class, read your way there, be one less corrupt person that the society has to deal with, and remember what you sow you will reap.

You need to have an heightened awareness of what the possible repercussions of your action and inaction are. You cannot sleep through this year wondering what happened. You need to make things happen. As a leader you have a responsibility to those you lead to lead well, ditto for you who follow at whatever level.

You are a person of influence whether you like it or not. The question is: are you the selfish kind or the selfless kind? Are you the corrupting type or the incorruptible? There is enough corruption on the earth already, why not be a force for good? But that does not happen by chance, you need to stand up for what is right, and dissociate yourself from what is wrong, you need to be informed enough to make the right decision and help others to do the same.

Happiness starts with the right decision, which may not be possible, except we arm ourselves with the required information. You cannot bury your head in the sand like an Ostrich this time around, you need all the information you can get to make the best decision you can make.

Happy New Year.
