Ondo State Government has been charged to look into generating funds through taxation rather than rely on the allocation from the Federal Government.
The charge was given with expectation to further enhance the State Government to discharge its social responsibilities to the people of the state.
It was made by the Task Team Leader (TTL), World Bank Implementation Support Mission to coordinate the Public Sector Governance Reform and Development Project, Mr. Ikechukwu Nweje during his courtesy visit to the State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko in his office in Akure, the State’s capital.
Nweje said the purpose of the team’s visit to the State among others is to strengthen the public financial management system and human management system in conformity with the Federal Government laws for this sector.
He said good governance could be achieved when the government has enough funds to implement projects that would benefit the people adding that the time has come for state governments to look inwards and maximise both its natural and human resources.
The team leader stressed that government needs to find a way to diversify its economy due to the global recess stressing that there is need for accountability, fairness and transparency in managing the available resources.
Nweje assured the governor that the team will assist the Board of Internal Revenue on how to improve on its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) system, and financial management.
He stated that the World Bank would give support to equipping officers and project reforms to enhance development.
Responding, the governor assured the team that their recommendations would be considered adding that the state would be willing to partner with the World Bank to improve the standard of living of the people.
Mimiko who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Abdulazeez Oluboyo appreciated the Bank for the various loans disbursed to artisans and traders saying this has boost their businesses and the state’s economy.
He urged the team to go round the state and appraise the various developmental programmes in the state adding that these people oriented projects are benchmark for other states to emulate.
