Ondo State Police Commissioner, Mr Mike Ogbodu has warned policemen against misuse of firearms and extra-judicial killing.
The CP noted that Force order 237 in the Police Act and Regulation has clearly spelt out when, to use fire arms saying any policeman caught to have misused his arms, if caught would be arrested and prosecuted.
Ogbodu who spoke while addressing officers rank and file of Fanibi, ‘B’ police division in Akure, Igbara-Oke, Okuta Elerinla Ijare and Oda divisional headquarters during his familiarization tour to police stations under Akure Area Command on Monday told them that hard times await any policeman alleged to have directly or indirectly misused his rifle.
According to him, police as an institution saddled with the responsibility of maintaining law and order in the society need to be civil to the members of the general public whom they are duty bound to protect.
His words: “You must be careful in the way and manner you handle your rifle, because any misuse of firearms would henceforth not be tolerated. Avoid extra-judicial killings.
“We have in the recent times been accused of misusing our rifles. You must not use your arms to intimidate, harass or molest anybody. Respect the Fundamental Rights of the citizens that you are mandated to protect.
“If you are caught in any act of misusing your arms and ammunition, you will have yourself to blame.
“Incivility to the members of the public would not be tolerated. Respect the members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) because they are part and parcel of you. PCRC members have been supporting the police in various areas of need you must accord them the necessary respect and regard they deserve from you.” .
He said that Inspector-General of Police, Mr Alonge Solomon is committed to their welfare, promotion and other incentives and as such, they should reciprocate with effective and efficient service delivery by discharging their lawful and legitimate duties with utmost professionalism.
The commissioner who noted that the era of corruption in the force are over enjoined policemen to shun every act of corrupt tendencies and focus on protecting lives and property of the people just as he commended the Divisional Police Officers of all the Stations and their men for living up to their lawful responsibilities.
The police boss urged them to continue to put in their very best in order to sustain the existing peace being enjoyed at the moment
Ogbodu who also used the tour to pay a courtesy visit to the Caretaker Chairman of Akure South Local Government, Mr Adebayo Alarapon commended him for the numerous supports given to the policemen in Oda Police Station urging him to continue in that spirit and direction.
Fighting crime and criminality, according to CP Ogbodu is a joint responsibility and not for the police alone, just as he called on spirited individuals to support the police with necessary logistics that would make their work easy and effective.
Responding, the council boss appreciated the police commissioner for the visit assuring him of more support to his men saying effective crime reduction in the society should not be left in the hands of the police alone, but should be a business for everyone.
At Igbara-Oke, the Caretaker Chairman of Ifedore local government, Barr. Wemimo while welcoming the CP to the Police division told him that the people of the area have been sleeping with their two eyes closed.
He commended the DPO in charge of Igbara-Oke and his men for sustaining the existing peace just as he promised to continue to assist the police in areas of needs.
