The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun has said that the only panacea for effective crime reduction in the society is for host communities and institutions to partner with relevant security agencies, especially the police, to tackle crime related issues happening in the society.

Ajibefun was of the opinion that the job of effective and efficient crime fighting cannot be the responsibility of the police alone but must be a joint effort which requires the maximum collaboration of institutions in order to achieve a sustainable peace in the land.

He made the assertion when the State Police Commissioner, Mr Mike Ogbodu paid him and his management staff a courtesy visit at the University in Akungba Akoko last Wednesday.

He told the police boss that the relative peace being enjoyed at the moment in the campus and the entire community of Akungba Akoko was as a result of the  partnership between the host communities and the university saying such relationship must be sustained and improved upon.

Describing the university community as very accommodating, Ajibefun said he is indeed happy to welcome the CP to the university, which according to him has been rated two consecutive times as the best state university in Nigeria.

He assured the CP that the university, under his leadership will continue to support the Police in their various areas of needs to enable them tackle all forms of crimes and criminalities in the land describing the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Femi Joseph as one of the products of the university.

While commending all his management staff for being hardworking towards ensuring that students of the great institution get the best, he disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force despite all challenges, have performed creditably well.

Responding, the police boss said he was on familiarisation tour of police formations in the state and that he decided to pay a visit to the institution, because a lot have been heard about the university, especially in the areas of academic excellence and peace.

“I decided to visit you and know this great university, which I have been hearing about in my days in the University of Lagos.

“I do believe that this institution is exceptional because much has been said about this university and I commend the Vice-Chancellor and your management staff for the peace and academic excellence the school is known for. I urge you to sustain the tempo,” Ogbodu stated.

The Regent of Akungba Land, Princess Toyin Omosowon who joined members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) to welcome the police boss to Akungba divisional headquarters urged him to beef up security in the community.

She said though the area is relatively peaceful, there is need for the police to be more proactive towards ensuring sustainable peace.

The Regent commended the DPO and his men for doing a wonderful job and appealed to the CP to post more men to the Division for effective policing.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the PCRC, Elder Ajemo, commended the CP for the visit and intimidated him about what the PCRC has done and pledged to continue to support the police in their duties.

Ogbodu, while thanking them for their assistance described the PCRC as those who render selfless services to the Police, just as he charged policemen to accord them their due respect anywhere they meet them.
